The Potential Impact of One Life

by Dec 16, 2024

Have you ever heard of Nicholas Winton? No? That’s okay; most people haven’t. But what if I told you that he is personally responsible for the existence of thousands of people and families all over the world? To those individuals, the name Nicholas Winton means everything.

One Life

Recently, a film quietly came out starring Anthony Hopkins called One Life. It tells the true story of an unlikely hero who, through his humanitarian efforts during World War II, saved 669 Czechoslovakian children from the Nazis by establishing a kinder transport operation primarily run by volunteers—against all odds.

The movie is compelling and deeply moving for many reasons, but what struck me most was how one person can create such significant change in the world and inspire others to risk everything to help, despite the dangers involved. Often, we may feel that our efforts as individuals are insignificant when trying to accomplish anything. However, the opposite is true.

All it Takes is One Person

Throughout history, huge movements and protests have begun with the voice and ideas of just one person:

There are countless examples.

We don’t all have to start a worldwide protest, but we should look at the life around us—our families, communities, counties, and states. As individuals, we have the power to help make change happen. When we come together, our collective efforts can become even more impactful.

You Too Can Make an Impact

If you have the financial means to donate to organizations that support causes or communities that matter to you, please do! And if you are over 70½, donating from your IRA may allow your contributions to go even further. If you find that donating your time or skills is more meaningful, there are many organizations that would welcome your help.

The bottom line is that one person can make a difference in someone else’s life! And when multiple individuals come together, they can create a significant impact on families and communities—often beyond what we could have ever imagined.
